The Burnett Group is first and foremost a beef cattle producer. Cattle are by far the biggest part of our business, and the care and management of our cattle is where we dedicate most of our time and energy.
For the most part, cattle are bred on our properties with the aim of producing grass fed Jap ox. Most of the bullocks that are sold each year have been born and raised on Burnett Group properties, but significant numbers of young store cattle are purchased each year also.
As the cattle are weaned from the breeder blocks or are purchased, they are moved onto the fattening properties where the better pastures grow. Here the cattle are left to grow and finish on extensive grass-fed grazing systems.
Depending on market conditions and opportunities, other markets are pursued from time to time including the supply of feedlot cattle and vealers.
Although there are many different breeds of cattle throughout the Burnett Group properties, the foundation or base breed of the Burnett Group is Braford. Brafords were first bred from the Burnett family’s original Hereford herd on Bendemeer in the 1960s. This was done through the introduction of some local Brahman bulls in order to improve the tick and heat resistance of the herd. The other main breeds used throughout our breeding systems are Brahman and European breeds consisting of Simmental and Charolais.
"I worked with the Burnett Group for over 5 years and can not speak highly enough of the support and guidance that I received in this time. I was initially employed as a Stationhand, however then moved into the Headstockman position at Frankfield. My partner Holly and I were sad to leave, but we have left with a great memories and the knowledge to pursue other interests in the beef cattle industry."
